Typical uses of CT imaging include: examinations of the brain, skull, teeth, spine, joints, abdomen and ligaments; detecting the location and exact size of tumors (including in the brain, nasal cavity, lungs, liver, and spleen); identifying congenital defects; diagnosing discospondylitis and intervertebral disc disease; and more!

CT scans are typically outpatient procedures, requiring only sedation or mild anesthesia. Images are immediately available for review and provide more detailed diagnostics than other imaging devices, such as x-ray or ultrasound. Our Vimago™ High Definition CT scanner is capable of rendering detailed images down to 0.09mm (90 microns) and can render post-scan 3D images of the patient, in addition to HD cross-sectional images.

USING VIMAGO™ TO DIAGNOSE CUSHINGS DISEASE IN 8 YO PITBULL TERRIER

SonoPath.com, a well-known and widely praised veterinary education and telemedicine site, recently received an interesting case, where Vimago™ was used to diagnose and differentiate between PDH (Pituitary-Dependent Hyperadrenocorticism) and ADH (Adrenal-Dependent Hyperadrenocorticism).

History
An 8-year-old, F/S, 77 lb, Pitbull Terrier was presented at RDVM for decreased activity level and behavioral changes. Blood work was performed and showed an increase in ALP. The patient also had a dental cleaning recently where they extracted multiple teeth and put her on oral Tramadol. The owner says that she was “normal” on March 20th but has slowly been declining. Repeat blood work showed an increase in ALP. Unable to perform physical exam due to hyper response. The owner reported the patient had become very head shy and aggressive with other dogs and had drastically changed in personality. RDVM recommended a brain CT scan and it was decided to include the liver due to increased ALP.

Using the Vimago CT the radiologist are able to identify moderate liver enlargement, mild symmetric adrenal hyperplasia and intracranial changes, thus a pituitary dependent hyperadrenocorticism with steroid induced hepatitis is the most likely diagnosis.

Outcome
Recommendations were for laboratory workup for possible Cushing’s and ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration of the liver for further definition. Medical treatment may be considered versus or in combination with radiation therapy.
